Catalan independence
This tradition places a high value on independence, both collective and personal. The mild climate allows Barcelonans to live life outside. They are masters of sociability when out in the streets and squares, bars and restaurants; and they engage fully in the community life of offices and shops, parks and sports fields. However, they are fiercely protective of the privacy that they enjoy in their homes, which they view as a safe haven where they can finally collapse in exhaustion.
This translates into a great respect for individual privacy. The infanta Cristina of Spain lived in the Sarria neighbourhood of Barcelona for years, living and working in the same way as anyone else, with no intrusive interest from the media or the proud but protective Sarria locals.
